New York Cares is New York City's leading volunteer organization. Each year, New York Cares enables 33,000 caring New Yorkers to volunteer at social service agencies, homeless shelters, public schools, and other deserving organizations. Last year, New York Cares volunteers helped 335,000 New Yorkers in need.

New York Cares volunteers make a difference in the lives of their neighbors in need 365 days a year. Volunteers help children, homeless adults and families, the elderly, people living with HIV/AIDS, new immigrants, unemployed adults and many others. 40% of New York Cares programs serve disadvantaged children, with many more projects supporting their families.

New York Cares Fast Facts
  • New York Cares was founded in 1987 by a group of friends interested in taking action against social problems facing New York City. After searching in vain for an organization that made it easy for people with busy work schedules to volunteer, they formed their own organization-New York Cares.
  • New York Cares is the model for 70 affiliated organizations around the world.
  • New York Cares played a pivotal role in mobilizing volunteers across the city after September 11th. The NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has designated New York Cares as the lead agency for mobilizing volunteers in future emergencies.
  • The New York Cares Coat Drive has collected over 1.1 million coats for New Yorkers in need each holiday season since 1989.

  • 80% are between the ages of 21 and 40, 72% female, 28% male.
  • Volunteers live and work in NYC, with the highest number (72%) in Manhattan.
